SECURITY

The government has a crucial role in providing security, both from external threats and internal issues. It needs strong powers to handle defense and manage international relations. This centralization of power often comes from the need for stability during times of war. Besides external dangers, governments can address natural disasters like storms and earthquakes, which require organized efforts that individuals cannot manage alone.

A significant responsibility of the government is to support those who cannot support themselves due to circumstances like illness, age, or disability. In modern society, many people do not have immediate support from close community ties, making government assistance essential. Providing a guaranteed minimum income for everyone can protect individuals from falling into poverty when they can’t work.

However, linking this support to ideas of income equality can complicate matters. If efforts to ensure equal income are funded by taxes, they may inadvertently increase inequality. Also, a strong claim for a minimum standard for all implies collective ownership of resources, which conflicts with the idea of an open society. Wealthier nations may be reluctant to lower their standards to meet global needs, which raises questions about national priorities and individual freedoms. Ultimately, any social security system must carefully balance support for individuals without undermining market order and personal liberty.
